Why Alkalize?
The pH, or “potential of Hydrogen” is the scale that measures the relative acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Solutions are measured from zero (totally acid) to fourteen (totally alkaline) and seven is neutral. The optimum blood pH in a healthy body is slightly alkaline and should fall within the narrow range of 7.35 and 7.45.
The human body is made of about 75% water, which is necessary for the transportation of nutrition, oxygen and other important biochemicals. It is important for this water-based medium to be pH balanced. Maintaining this slightly alkaline state is a constant challenge for the body because of all the acid producing foods and beverages we consume.
It is important to understand pH and the role an balanced, alkalized body plays in maintaining our overall health. The tissues and cells of the human body are composed of different chemical elements and are very sensitive to pH balance. Many individuals will spend hundreds of dollars each year on chemicals to keep the pH of their swimming pool maintained, or an unhealthy environment soon results. Just as critical, the pH of the body has to be maintained, or we become susceptible to disease and pain.
The pH of your blood must remain between 7.35 &
7.45.
If your blood’s pH rises or falls one tenth of a pH unit, it’s
cause for a visit to a hospital’s intensive care unit.
If blood pH moves two tenths either way, it’s lethal.
The body’s natural metabolic processes produce acidic waste. This cellular waste needs to be neutralized in order to be safely eliminated without damaging tissues of the glands and organs responsible for detoxifying the body. Acidity encourages decomposition, decay, disease and energy loss. Most Americans maintain high acidity because of “acid-causing” lifestyle characteristics that include, but are not limited to, diet, stress and a toxic environment. Therefore, “alkaline input” (supplements, foods, lifestyle habits) is essential to insure a healthy level of balance. Prolonged pH imbalance decreases the body’s ability to absorb protein, minerals and other nutrients, decreases energy production in the cells, decreases the body’s ability to repair damaged cells and detoxify heavy metals.
Foods that contribute to an acidic level are meats, white rice, cheese, coffee, alcohol, pasta, breads, sugar and chocolate. Foods that help reduce acid levels are vegetables, fruits, potatoes, almonds, pine nuts, flax, honey and plain yogurt.
